Most
Holy Redeemer is a small Catholic church, tucked away
behind trees and hedges in quiet Sayesbury Road, Sawbridgeworth,
Hertfordshire, just a couple of minutes walk from the
main A1184 linking Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford.
The church is housed in what was once the town cinema,
which was converted into a place of worship more than
half a century ago.
History
of Parish
Ours is a friendly congregation, including quite a few
very young families. We have a Sunday Mass at 9.30am,
after which there is usually a cup of tea or coffee
available, and people tend to stay awhile and chat.
Weekday Masses are usually at 12.30pm on Wednesdays
and Fridays.
Our priest is Father Bob Styles, a Jesuit, and we share
him with our partner parish, The Holy Cross in Much
Hadham. Their Mass times complement ours, with the Sunday
one at 11am. We not only share Fr. Bob with The Holy
Cross, but also social events and sacramental preparation
programmes.
Music and musical events are an important part of our
worship and life as a parish.
Our main Choir,
led by Clare Hodgson, sings for us at the 9.30am Mass
and major festivals. In addition, we have a wealth of
musical and acting talent among our parishioners which
is revealed in various concerts from time to time. And
we presented full-scale productions of Godspell in 2002
and Jesus Christ Superstar in 2005.

We like to get together as a
parish socially whenever possible, and events have included
a wine tasting at a parishioner’s home, a quiz night,
and even line dancing.
We have a Prayer Group, open to all, which meets at the
church fortnightly, and St Gerard's Playgroup (Rising
Threes) on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (9.15
- 11.45 am) in the church extension. |
